I'm not sure what threads you saw, but they were probably from before
we decided to change 1.6 to 1.7 with the new CSS framework. So 1.7 in
those conversations were probably really talking about what will now
be 1.8.
Anyway, we're working on our positioning plugin right now (
http://wiki.jqueryui.com/PositionTo ), which will support fixed
positioning. Once that's done we'll incorporate use of that plugin
into the dialog positioning code and then we'll finally support fixed
position for dialogs.
