Filter a table with a button click?

I have seen examples of table filtering with drop-downs that appear as a row in the table header. I'm trying to set up a graphical UI where there will be 3 graphic buttons above the table with pre-defined filters assigned to them which will filter a table.

Here is the general idea in a simplified form:

I saw this plugin, but again, it works with text filters, drop-down lists or check boxes.

How would I modify it to work with an onClick event for an image-based button like in my screen shot?

With a button click you could set the filter element to whatever value that you would like. Let's say that the plugin is looking for an element with the id of filter to be set to something;

$('myButton').click(function() {
$('#filter').html(search_term);
});
