JQM App slow on BB Torch 9810

I'm developing this html5 app using jqm in order to get better at mobile web. Now I own a BB Torch 9810(the 1.2Ghz processor one ) and when testing the app on the phone. The navigation is so slow(transitions are set to none, the click handlers some times don't fire( clicked objects get the highlighted theme so I know they were clicked), at times takes 3-5 secs to fire which is just crippling slow. Animations are also slow, ie, the flipswitch widget, the animation there is choppy, not fluid at all.

I've run this app on my bro's and sister's iphone 3gs and galaxy s2 respectively and it is so much better, actually pretty damn responsive on their devices. Not that way on my BB.

So is this a problem with the framework or BBerry phone(my phone for example runs yahoo's news mobile site very fluid and fast, so I'm thinking it's the framework.

Hi there,

Any chance you could post up a sample on JSFiddle or JSBin and share that? Would be great to see the implementation and it would give us a chance to compare as well.

Also, can you please confirm the full OS version from Options > About > About Device Versions for your device?

My initial test was on a 9900 running 7.1.0 and while it does run slower than a desktop PC, performance seemed to be reasonable. Though reasonable is a pretty subject term. The primary tests I performed were expanding the Upcoming Meds and Missing Meds sections, launching the New Prescription tab, and clicking through the components on that page.

I'll fire up a 9810 with your noted OS version to compare how it holds up against the 9900 performance.

One thing to note is that jQuery does introduce a slight delay to click interactions (I believe in the area of ~300ms) on touch devices to ensure that it is actually a "tap" event (not a drag, etc.)

I didn't actually see elements being interacted with (i.e. getting focus) but not triggering any action on the 9900. But as mentioned, I'll fire up a 9810 and run a comparison. From there, these may be best suited for the jQuery Mobile issue tracker.

Also, in the New Prescription page, test out Schedule page and try to play w/ the slider and flipswitch.

It could be that my device is slowing down(I have noticed it's not as blazing fast as it used to be), when I get home tonight I will perform a full OS reload.

Ah yes, I am seeing some lag on those components while they're animating.

The slow navigation can also be seen when viewing jqm's docs page. Especially popups and dialogs, those are notoriously slow on my device.

I would like to throw in a quick comment. If you look at the device support page, there is a quote here that may interest you.

We use a 3-level graded platform support system: A (full), B (full minus Ajax), C (basic HTML). The visual fidelity of the experience and smoothness of page transitions are highly dependent on the CSS rendering capabilities of the device and platform so not all A grade experience will be pixel-perfect but that’s the nature of the web.

The definition given by JQuery Mobile for A, B and C grade along with the user experience. The performance is relative to the device, and BB devices are never great on performance... At least in my opinion.

There are ways to cut down to allow for better performance - one big thing is to remove gradients from your application, though with a small application that shouldn't cause huge performance decreases. The second is to use the downloader and only download the option in JQuery Mobile that are important to your application.

I just find it kind of strange that my brother's iphone 3GS with a 600mhz processor can navigate much smoother than a Torch 9810 1.2Ghz can. This leads me to believe it's a shortcoming of the bb browser.

Great observations.

In comparison to BlackBerry 10, and even the BlackBerry PlayBook, the difference is night and day. As the WebKit rendering engine version is dependent on the OS version, BlackBerry devices which are not seeing OS updates as frequently will certainly be impacted.

The part that would worry me is if two 7.0/7.1 devices were presenting drastically different behaviour. If that's the case, we're likely looking at an OS issue. However if the 9810 performs similarly to the 9900, without framework improvements I don't think there will be a whole lot we can do in this case. Edit: Not to place blame on the framework, but as noted, likely just a result of the state of the rendering engine there.
