Hmm, not so sure this is a bug.  I set up a simple test case with both versions and tested IE7 and 8.

1.4.1 suffers from a bug in which change doesn't fire on the initial change, but 1.4.2 appears to work normally, at least in this simple test.  

Your examples work indeed. I modified your examples to make use of <select> (cause there's the problem in my application), and in this simple case it workes as well - change fires.

In a more complex application however, there definitely is a problem. The only way I can make it work is by not changing 1.4.1 (as in "<script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.1/jquery.min.js"></script>") to 1.4.2. Since I don't change my code at all, the reason seems to be found only in 1.4.2.

I highly suspect that live doesn't bind the change event properly for new objects that got appended by a $.load() call, which is the case in my application. Let me know if I can help in any way.

I created a simple another simple test, and it works in IE6 as expected.

The test appends the dropdown in .ready(). That's pretty much what I do, except that in real life, the whole form is appended by using .load(), and the .live()-event is bound to all forms with a given class, like this:

$('form.uap').live('change', function(e) {
        alert('hello!);
});

This does not work in IE6 with 1.4.2, but does work with 1.4.1.

Sorry but I can't setup any public access for this application I'm working on for now, and I'm not sure how to make a similar test with jsbin.com .

My bad in that example John. I am listening for live change on "form.uap select" in fact. As for the specific use case: I have a couple of forms that are used to filter out some results, and I want to handle them with one function, so I give those forms a class ("uap") and bind live to form.uap select. Also, as the forms are always loaded with .load() I have to use .live() to bind the event.

http://jsbin.com/udite/5 contains the relevant bit of my code (except it's not $.load()-ed). It works in IE6 & IE7 on 1.4.2 . I'm not sure what else I can try here, but in the actual application I still have to go with 1.4.1 in order for this to work. :/

I created another example, http://jsbin.com/udite/8/ . This one $.load()'s the form with dropdowns, and is as close as it gets to my application. The only difference is that this one works in IE6 with jQuery 1.4.2 and 1.4.1, while in the real app the event fires only under 1.4.1 (and not 1.4.2).

Recap: I have not changed my code between 1.4.1 and 1.4.2. This functionality was previously achieved under jQuery 1.3.2 with the .livequery plugin. When I upgraded jQuery from 1.3.2 to 1.4.1 I removed the plugin and changed all the .livequery() to .live(). This workes well in 1.4.1 but was somehow broken in 1.4.2.

I'm not sure what else I can do (except sticking with 1.4.1) so please let me know if you have any ideas.

I have the same problem in my app. The ".live('change'..." for my selects works with 1.4.1 but not 1.4.2. Could it be related to the problem reported in the following thread:

I'm new in here, but my problem is similar like the first questioner.

I know that ticket is already exists, but I thought I write another example what otherwise is my problem.

So I have a simple select menu which I listening the change event. And when the change has been occurred, I load another page with ajax. And in the loaded page has another select menu. And the problem is here. Because here I need the live method with the change event if I want to change this value. But this doesn't work with IE8. 

So in the page which has been loaded with ajax, there doesn't work the live/change combo in IE8.

I thought write this, maybe I tell something news. I hope take this post into consideration.

So my problem is not exactly the live/change combo but the live/submit.

When I load a page with ajax there doesn't work good the live/submit combo.

By now, i'm attaching the change event everytime I duplicate the input file, but I prefered to use live() instead of it.
