I would suggest that you look into the double loading of some of the stylesheets and scripts.
Then look at removing the min-height (inline) style your have on the cell containing your tabs, and the height style set on both div.container and div.main. I think that should solve your whitespace problem. You'll then need to play around with how you specify heights, in order to achieve the layout you want.

The initial page received from the server shows the double loading (but different versions of jQuery!).
We have no way of telling what is happening server-side to construct that HTML.
