Return unique ID with jQuery.data(elem)

Before 1.4, it is possible to return an unique ID with jQuery.data(elem), now seems does not work.

http://api.jquery.com/jQuery.data/

The new api must need a key, what is the key then?

I just want an unique ID by inputing an element, why I need such a key?

The unique ID it was returning was the the ID of the element in jQuery.cache. In 1.4, jQuery.data(elem) returns the actual data cache for the element.

What exactly are you actually trying to obtain?

Just want to have unique ID for a particular dom element, that's handy if you want to save the element into a global array (if originally it does not have the id attribute).

Anyway, it was a bad experience since jQuery don't keep a consistent function interface.
