trim() and IE

in Using jQuery • 3 years ago

I get an error saying the object doesn't support this property or method for the following code:

$('a').click(function() {
var theText = $(this).text().trim():
....

I saw posts on IE not trimming properly but in this case it does not even accept the method. What am I doing wrong?

var theText = $.trim( $(this).text() );

IE doe snot support String.trim, and the following proves. When I ran this with IE8, it said "not supported".

<head>
<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery-1.4.2.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
alert('trim' in String.prototype ? "supported" : "not supported");
});
</script>
</head>
<body>
</body>
</head>

If you like the original syntax, do this:

<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery-1.4.2.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
String.prototype.trim = function() {return $.trim(this)}
$(document).ready(function() {
alert("[" + " ABC ".trim() + "]");
});
</script>
</head>
<body>
</body>
</head>

Thanks Eric,
That works great.

I am new to web development (coming from the desktop world) and every day I am amazed at Microsoft's either ignorance or arrogance when it comes to IE and how out of step it is with the rest of the world. Seems to me not so difficult to understand how to comply with standards and to include common functionality if they would simply think of the end users and developers. Well that is my rant. I have to admit that until recently I have been an ardent MS supporter but they seem to be loosing the initiative in the web world, for sure.
