Problems with AJAX call

I'm pretty new to jquery and ajax, but not new to the world of web programming. I'm having difficulty running an ajax call. Here is my code:

index.html:

When I browse to the URL directly (for now it's a simple webserver that I have created, that's why it's on port 12345) I receive the response I'm expecting:

However when I try it with the ajax call I listed above, it always errors and never succeeds.

I've also tried this using a url from my website and a simple php script with the same results:

I've looked at code that has worked for me in the past and they are identical in form and syntax (with different data of course), yet this won't work. Please help!
