autocomplete state reflects labels clicked in the menu but not labels typed in

Forum:
Using jQuery UI
Good: The select event is fired when an item is chosen from the menu.
Bad:
1) If a valid label is typed in, the select event is not fired.
2) If an invalid label is typed in, the select event is not fired.
The change event is fired on blur.
Neither event sets the ui parameter for a label which is typed in.
How can a hidden field containing a valid item's value or an invalid item's label be sync-ed with the autocomplete?

Can validation methods which require parameters be expressed in class= as in:
class="min(0)"
How is more than one parameter expressed?
Thx.
