IRC Rewards System

I have learned 90% of what I know about jQuery from lurking in the #jquery IRC channel thanks to the generous folks that answer questions there.

Often, people are ungrateful, petty, and pedantic, but the guys there seem to stick it out day after day.

I would love to see some sort of recognition system where people could reply publicly about the great help they received from someone in IRC. Perhaps even a micro-payment system where you could donate a beer or the equivalent to someone that helped you.

I, for one, would like to buy Eviltwin a beer (or a sixpack for that matter) for all the help that he offers to so many people every day. It's really kind of amazing that he can juggle that many idiotic requests/questions at one time. And though he gets grumpy from time to time (just like everyone else), I can honestly say that if it weren't for him, a lot of people would still be stuck and miserable.

So, I propose that the jQuery team come up with a way to reward those folks that make the #jquery IRC channel such a wonderful resource. It's really a critical component to jQuery's success in my opinion.

I didn't see a forum to discuss the IRC channel specifically and though the IRC channel is not officially part of the forum, I was hoping that the same generous people in IRC would also man the forums and would be willing to discuss this issue.

First, I want to say that up until recently, I logged in regularly to the IRC channel to listen in and learn. It is by far and away the most amazing resource for learning jQuery. I try to spend as much time answering questions as I do asking and I try not to ask questions that are a matter of documentation or that could be definitively looked up on Google. I have profound respect for the hours people spend in the #jquery channel and the invaluable generosity of the people there to help.

What I don't get, however, is why people get so hateful and mean. Sure, it's not as bad as the folks in #css (whose terrible attitudes are as obvious as CSS is counter-intuitive), but there is still no shortage of snide comments and general rudeness by the people who are also the most generous.

I mean, often someone will go out of their way to be hateful and rude when they could answer the question in less time with less effort? If they don't want to field the stupid questions or if they hate being helpful so much that they have to take it out on folks, perhaps they should take a break?

And if you find yourself in the peculiar situation of knowing enough about jquery to help about 70% of the people in the IRC channel, but not enough to help everyone, God help you if you slip and ask a simple question that could be answered by the API documentation.

Sometimes, when I begin looking up something in the API, I get so sidetracked that I can't get my work done. I have, on occasion, simply asked a question like:" how does .on handle the target selector in the object notation?" thinking that the answer would be equally as simple to answer. It's not that I refuse to look through the API, it's just that I find that the advice you can get from someone who has experience in the matter far outweighs the "official" documentation and almost always saves time to hear someone else's experience.

But instead, I get berated for even asking the question. If you don't want to answer; if it's a waste of your time, then why not just keep your harsh judgments to yourself? Why be rude about it?

Like I said to begin with, I think the #jquery channel is the best part of the jquery support infrastructure, but I just don't understand why it has to be so bittersweet. It wasn't that way six months ago...it's just been lately. A quick glance at the logs will show that some people need to take a break or learn some patience. Regardless of how helpful they are.

Could .animate be made to protect properties when easing?

Although I am not certain that this is my issue, I believe that I am receiving an error in Firefox as a result of values being passed to animate for opacity that don't work (negative values, to be specific).

If I animate something using "easeInOutBack" or "easeOutBack" easing methods, they both have a point where the value extends past your destination value. If you animate opacity with position, it registers an error in Firefox.
$("#someItem").click(function () {$(this).animate({opacity:0, left:-300}, 2000, "easeOutBack")});, for example will cause an error.

So the question/suggestion is: Is there a way to make certain scalar properties constrain to acceptable values when easing them? So "opacity" would never be negative or greater than 1, for example

I'm not sure if this would be a hard thing to handle or if I should just lump it and figure out how to animate the properties with different easing methods.

Help with history object, back and forward buttons in ajax content

I need help sifting through the mounds and mounds of mis-information and folklore associated with retrieving content via ajax and keeping the history object, back and forward buttons working.

I took a look at a history plugin (or five) and they all seemed to mess up the jQuery namespace something terrible. So I tried taking the most understandable of these plugins and namespacing it myself, but I just don't quite get it.

As such, could someone point me to a valid tutorial that explains how to manage the browser history when loading content via ajax in jQuery?

Thanks in advance for any advice. I have found so many resources, but trying to figure out which one to listen to has proven next to impossible.

When using the queue setting in jQuery.animate, are callbacks disabled?

I am having a problem getting my callbacks to fire when I use the queue option and wondered if this was normal.
1. $("#someid").animate(cssopts, {duration:3000, queue:false},"easeOutExpo",function () {alert ("hello");});
does not callback, however this does:
1. $("#someid").animate(cssopts,3000,"easeOutExpo",function () {alert ("hello");});
What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for your help.

Advice for large intro video?

I have a website that I have designed with a starting page and an "enter here" button that upon clicking should start a video (where the button and the background image on the page do some fancy 3D thing leading to a video of about 11 seconds in length). When the video is done, I need the 'home page' to load.

I don't want controls on the video (other than maybe a skip option, but no stop/start/volume/etc) and I don't want to use Flash because it will be accessed often on the iPad. I'm not opposed to using the HTML5 video element, but I was really hoping that Jquery had something that would help.

I can't figure out when the video is over. Anybody have any suggestions/advice?

Quick help with ajax loading dependent js/css

How do I load the scripts and css that are normally included in the header of a document when loading the document via ajax?

I want my customer to be able to generate css-styled pages with minimal javascript that can be loaded through ajax from a menu, but I can't figure it out.

All I need is some instruction on how to use Regexp to extract the "src" and "href" attributes from the <script> and <style> tags in the header of a dynamically loaded document. Once I have them in an array, I have the rest of the problem solved.

Any help?

Is there a better way to do this?

Really simple question with $.bind()

I would really like to be able to do this:

$(".someClass").slideTo(someProps);

and I can't figure it out.

I thought I could use:

$(".someClass").bind("slideTo",obj,function (obj) {
//do something here
});
$(".someTrigger").click(function () {
$(".someClass").trigger("slideTo");
}

so I tried the simplest version of bind and couldn't get it to make sense:

$("#myAlertbox").bind("saySomething","",function () {
alert ("something");});
$("#myButton").click(function () {
$("#myAlertbox").trigger("saySomething");
}

nope, didn't work.

Any ideas? Your advice is greatly appreciated.

AutoComplete Widget Suggestions

First of all, the UI.autoComplete widget rocks, thank you so much. I had some ideas that were not implemented in your examples and thought I would share them in case they would be easy to add to the widget's core. I haven't tried coding these options myself, so I don't know if these suggestions are feasable or even within the scope of the widget, but I figured someone would have some input:

Item 1 - options.multiple.autoAddbyKey (bool)
I was noticing that when entering multiple values, you have to click on the value you want to use if it pops up. I think it would be nice to be able to hit one of these keys to add the highlighted value to your input form:
- forward arrow -- enters the highlighted value in the field and waits for input to determine if a "," needs to be added. If it's the last entry and the user presses TAB for next field...don't put the comma, if the user starts typing after the forward arrow, suggest new value and enter comma space after last entry (see item 4 below)
- space --same as forward arrow (see item 4 below)
- comma -- different from the forward arrow and space bar input selectors, the comma would add the highlighted value AND the comma and space immediately following (see item 4 below)
- semicolon -- same as comma (see items 4, 5 below)
Item 2a - options.multiple.prohibitDuplicates
When entering multiple values into a single field, there should be an option to restrict multiple identical values. If I start typing "ja" and the list of options appears, I would like to press ",ja" to automatically add "java" to the input value along with a comma and space and then autoSuggest "Javascript" would appear--not "Java" again.

item 2b- options.multiple.removeEntered
In other words, there should be an initialization option that eliminates existing values from the suggested dictionary. In fact, the ideal implementation would automatically remove any tokens whether manually entered or autoComplete entered.

Item 3 - options.multiple.forceSep, options.multiple.definedSep
When entering multiple values, you should be able to add a default token separator. In other words, if the programmer needs comma separated values, the default token separator should be set to comma (space). If semi-colons should be used, you should be able to setup options to automatically convert commas into semi-colons as entered.

Item 4 - options.prohibitBlanks
You may already do this, but you should check the input for trailing separators or blank separators as needed. In other words, if your separator is a comma, you should have the option of restricting input so that the user can't enter "comma comma" or "comma space comma" Also, if the field ends in space, strip it. If it ends in comma space (or token separator space) remove both when advancing to next field.

Item 5 - options.multiple.autoAddintelligent
When selecting an option from the autocomplete field, the value should be added to the input and a listener should check for additional keyboard input before inserting the separator character. A list of acceptable separators could be defaulted and predefined, but unified. In other words the following make good separators: comma, semicolon, colon, period, space and an option to auto-replace with preferred token separator should be added.

Item 6 - options.multiple.encaseSpace, options.multiple.forceEncase, options.multiple.definedEncase{prefix, suffix}
An option to restrict space characters in multiple input should be added even if the token separator is not set to space. However, if autocomplete has options defined with spaces in them and this option is set, the autoinserted value should be encased in quotes.This should also be optional.

Summary:
- options.multiple.autoAddbyKey (bool)-automatically adds highlighted value using keyboard
- options.multiple.prohibitDuplicate (bool)-do not let duplicate values be added to multiple input fields
- options.multiple.removeEntered (bool) -- remove entered values from the popup selection
- options.multiple.forceSep (bool)-- automatically changes separators into the default separator
- options.multiple.definedSep - (string) --the required separator, if defined automatically sets the useDefinedSep to true if not otherwise declared
- options.multiple.prohibitBlanks (bool) -- checks input for blank entries or repeated separators
- options.multiple.autoAddintelligent (bool) -- if set to true, will only add the separator when appropriate, if set to false, will automatically add the separator upon autoselect (value set to true if useDefinedSep is set to true)
- options.multiple.prohibitSpace (bool) - does not allow multiple items to contain space characters
- options.multiple,removeSpaceSuggest (bool) - automatically removes any dictionary items containing spaces if prohibitSpace option is set - overrides encase options
- options.multiple.encaseSpace (bool) -- prohibitSpace is set to true, this option automatically encases entries between separators in quotes. It also adds quotes to dicitionary items that contain spaces if removeSpaceSuggest is set to false
- options.multiple.forceEncase (bool) automatically add default encase characters to multiple inputs
- options.multiple.definedEncase (object) - if forceEncase is set to true, automatically add these tags to multiple entries.
- options.multiple.definedEncase.prefix (string) - if forceEncase is set to true, automatically add this to the beginning of every entry
- options.multiple.definedEncase.suffix (string) - if forceEncase is set to true, automatically add this to end of every entry
I will be working on trying to encode these as my own plugin, but having never written a plugin for jQuery, I suspect it will take me a lot longer than anyone who knows jQuery inside out.

If these options do not belong in the UI.autoComplete widget core and somebody develops a plugin that enables these features, please please let me know.

jQuery UI toggle class demo does nothing?

I thought maybe it was my browser (I use Rockmelt (aka Chrome) or Flock (aka Mozilla 3.x)), but I have since tried the demo in all browsers and saw no effects:

Could someone help with custom tab position implementation in jQueryUI?

In the demo about bottom-aligned tabs, it suggests that you build your tabs, then run a script that strips the "ui-corners-all" and "ui-corners-top" classes from your tab elements and add "ui-corners-bottom".

And there is no documentation about changing the position of the panel tabs, though I am sure it is similar.

As such, I took the jqueryUI code and upon applying the styles to the "elements", "list", "lis", and "panels",

I check to see if the options array contained bottomtabs==true? and if it did, I added "ui-corners-bottom". If not, I added "ui-corners-all, ui-corners-top"

I also checked to see if the options array contained paneltabtop==true? and if it did, I added "ui-corners-all ui-corners-top" otherwise I used the default "ui-corners-bottom"

I almost got it right, but it needs a little work. Can someone give me some input? Personally, I think that this should be a standard implementation in jQueryUI, but until it is (or if it never is), could someone help me get it setup correctly for my own use?

It works pretty well, but I am sure there is shorter syntax for the conditional class implementation.

Ideally, rather than passing options in the constructor, I would have the tabs constructor look in the source divs parent class list for "ui-panels-top" or "ui-tabs-bottom" class and automatically apply the corrections.

Then your constructor would remain identical to how it is normally, and you would just add the alternate class to the tab holding div. Voila! your tabs are aligned on the bottom.

Why does the JQUERY UI theme use literal icon declarations?

I am new to this, so please be patient--this is probably a stupid question.

I noticed that the icon sets provided in the UI Theme CSS are literal-encoded into the CSS rather than using jQuery to apply the offset dynamically based on a lookup table.

Why not just have the offset values applied using jquery so that you could add non-standard icons to the set without having to rewrite your theme css?

Furthermore, it seems like you could setup a simple grid where the columns represented various states of the icon and the rows represented the various icons. Then by adding state classes, you would be changing the offset column of the sprite and by changing the name, you would change the vertical row of the sprite.

I am sure there's a good reason, but I am not sure what it is. Could someone explain?

Super Simple Jquery Ajax Question

For the life of me, I can't find the answer to this question (yes I've searched and searched and googled and binged)

When I send a jquery $.ajax() request to load an html page, does it load the raw html with the header declaration and all if I don't provide a context?

I want to load any necessary stylesheets that are required of a page that I load in ajax. I figure that I can parse the header, look for stylesheet declarations and append the declarations to my DOM, but not if the only contents I receive are the HTML Body.

Can someone please point me to a simple way to ensure that external style sheets/scripts are loaded and applied to contents loaded through $.ajax()?

I am using the simple $.ajax({url:someurl, success:function(html) {$("#holder").html(html)});

But then I am unsure if the header will be added to the "holder" div so I can parse it using jquery.

I know this is simple, but I figured it would be quicker to ask than to keep trying to figure out the right search terms. I would gladly take an explanation or even just a url to a tutorial that would explain what I want to do better. Thanks in advance for your time and patience.
