Mixing nodes from AJAX XML into current HTML document (does not work in IE)

I select some node from the current document.

I retrieving an XHTML (strict, text/xml) document via "AJAX" (thus as XML) and select some nodes from it.

I try to append clones (or not) of the XML nodes to the HTML nodes.

This is the "simplified" idea:

$.get("/", function (data) {
target = $("#target");
source = $(data).find("#source").children();

target.append($(source));
});

This works in Firefox, Chrome and Safari, but fails silently in IE9.

"data" in IE9 is an "IXMLDOMDocument2", while in Safari it's "Document".

source.html() doesn't work (it's not supposed to), so I can't recreate the nodes.

How can mix nodes retrieve from an XML document retrieved via AJAX, into the current HTML document?
