1.4.0 icon sprites?

1.4.0's new icon markup (or removal of) appears to have rendered icon sprites impossible to use
any work around?
css or javascript?

Is it just me, or is this a very peculiar design choice?
The new inline SVG is top-notch, but I don't see why the icon pseudo selector / removal of <span class=ui-icon"> was necessary
