Has .attr been removed entirely in 1.9?

Or is it still around but simply no longer able to set properties (as opposed to attributes) ?

I'm finding the upgrade guide to be a bit ambigious.

Full disclosure - Haven't had time to do my own testing. I would avoid asking this question on the grounds that it doesn't take much to answer it by trying it out, but I think it's a good idea to document it clearly anyway, so here it is.
