Auto-focus on dialog elements

I dug through some of the documentation, but I can't seem to figure
out how to stop the dialog from auto-focusing on any element. Is there
a way to prevent that from happening? On the flip side, is there also
a way to specify what I wanted focused first?
I did look at the Events portion of the documentation but it doesn't
seem to click in my head for some reason.
