autocomplete widget status

I couldn't easily find this on the wiki; can someone remind me what the
status of the autocomplete widget is? I noticed it hasn't been updated
in svn for a while, and they have not yet made it from branches/labs to
branches/dev. I find myself needing an autocomplete widget so I'ld be
willing to do some work on it, limited as my widget skillset is.
