becoming a JS/Jquery Developer

Hey Guys my name is gautam . I have been in web development for like 6 months now , i actually wanna be a developer . basically i would like something thats more in pure javascript , maybe a small application , a small pluggin , i don' know what would be best . well i am sure people around here have alot of experience and maybe you'll could guide me the right way . 

would working on open-source , really help me build a skill ? could you'll suggest a simple open source project , that i could work on ? (JS/Jquery is fine , preferably JS though) . As i said i really wanna learn and learn fast , I know it takes maybe years to build a skill , i am ready to make mistakes and learn . I am looking for something moving into application development , web-development too would be fine , but the former is my preferance .
