FadeIn and FadeOut problem with smooth transitions

I built a site using FadeIn and FadeOut to phase in and out divs, but when I load the page from my portfolio site a bunch of the divs that are .hide() flicker on the screen and it doesn't look smooth. (it doesn't happen everytime, so try again if it doesn't happen first time) I've been stuck on this problem for awhile so if anyone knows how to resolve this please let me know.
