Hover slide out issue

I have a Div - full screen width. Inside that I ave a fontawesome icon with padding around it. When hovered over I want to expand a DIV below.

I've got this done and works fine.

But;

Because there is white space between my icon and my expanded DIV as soon as I mouse out from the icon it goes away.

I want it to remain expanded until I move away from the icon and expanded div
