How can I do scalable images in IExplorer and Firefox as the Responsive Web Design suggested?

Using the "max-width" property doesn't work for IE an Firefox, but it does for Chrome. I am not interested in the reason of that, but in a solution, a way to simulate these property if I have an image inside a table that I want to be resize if the width of the table changes.
