how could it store data in jquery 1.12

how could it store data in jquery 1.12

$(".foo").data("foo","bar")

in high version of jquery,it will add a attribute to the DOM node,named "data-foo"

but i jquery 1.12,it won't

so i wonder how could it store datas?
