Importing content

I need to import the contents of a .txt file into a single string and store it in a variable. I've been racking my head how to do this in Javascript (because it needs to be local, so no HTTP request). Is it possible to do something like this in jQuery?

If so, could you kindly point me in the direction of where I should be looking?
