jQuery 1.7 vs 2.2.1 vs 3.0

Hi, What's the difference between jQuery 1,7 and jQuery 2.2.1? If I l buy a book that teach jQuery 1.7 will I miss a lot once I transition to jQuery 2.2.1 or the upcoming jQuery 3.0?
