I am in the process in teaching myself web design, I know how to do basic CSS and understand code quite well, however, when ever I use jQuery I get "there is a syntax error on line..."

I have followed two seperate j Query tuts and have also copied code off other sites and still get this error through my code on different lines alll thhhee tiimmee... At first I thought it maybe something I was doing but now I am thinking otherwise.
