I was looking this page, under jquery documentation (because I would like to write a jquery plugin). 

Now, I understand that 'greenify' will became a chainble plugin. But, 'ltrim' and 'rtrim' what are considered? Unchainable plugins? It is allowed ?

In general, functions written in style $.XYZ (without 'fn'), what are useful for?
