[jQuery] Effects question

Hi,
I've just started working with jQuery (switched over from prototype) and
while I'm enjoying the experience very much, I've run into some
problems. I'd like to use some of the basic effects in jQuery, like
fade, etc. but I've noticed a rather peculiar "side-effect" (no pun
intended) to these functions. When I take a simple element on my page
and try to fade it, the element disappears completely and reappears
after the fade effect has ended. As far as I can see, this is because
invoking the effect changes the display style of my element to "block".
My question is, is this the intended/desired behaviour or should this be
considered a bug? Is there maybe a way to circumvent this changing of
the display style?
