<div class=Section1>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>So – this has probably been covered – but
it’s a difficult one to google, and it’s been bugging me for a
while:<o:p></o:p></span></font>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'><o:p> </o:p></span></font>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>Let’s say I would normally design a page that produces
a bunch of div sections, each with an edit link that looks like this –<o:p></o:p></span></font>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'><o:p> </o:p></span></font>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'><a href=”/edit/clip/32”
onclick=”edit_clip(32)”>edit</a><o:p></o:p></span></font>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'><o:p> </o:p></span></font>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>Now let’s say I want to get rid of the onclick
attribute, and attach events when the document loads. So now instead of
‘32’ as the argument, I get a reference to the element. <o:p></o:p></span></font>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'><o:p> </o:p></span></font>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>So what is the correct way to get that 32 out? It
can’t be through string-manipulating the href …. Can’t be
through inventing your own attribute myid=”32” …. So would
you use name or id attributes? That seems iffy because there are plenty of
cases where those are needed for other purposes….<o:p></o:p></span></font>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'><o:p> </o:p></span></font>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>Thanks…<o:p></o:p></span></font>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'><o:p> </o:p></span></font>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 color="#444444" face=Verdana><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Verdana;color:#444444'>- Ethan</span></font><o:p></o:p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:
