[jQuery] Get the value from an input field

guys,<br /><br />i'm working since a couple of days with jquery, i think
it's great. But now i have a problem and couldn't solve it so far.<br
/><br />I want to get the value of an input field, i know that that it
should work with var firstName1 = $("FIRST_NAME1_").val(); but
it didn't!<br /><br />To set the value with
$("#FIRST_NAME1").val(theFirstName); is working fine, but the
way reverse not.<br /><br /><br />Has anybody an idea how i could solve
