JQuery installation - JQuery having no effect on page at all

I am working with JQuery for the first time today and have gone through the process of downloading it from jquery.com and inserted it in my page using <script src="/js/jquery-1.2.6.js" type="text/javascript"></script> I've also connected another js file in which i have put the JQuery code. The css file tags and classes match and all the code is happily in place. And yet it doesn't work. Please could anyone help me understand what I've done wrong? I'm working with ASP pages but even with HTML pages, the JQuery code fails to work I'm wondering if I've missed a step in the installation process or whether there is something I need to do to the server to make it work?
