Jquery Navigation

Hi i was wondering if any of you would be able to point me in the right direction or help me get started. I am just learning javascript and jquery and I am looking to do a user interface system using key commands ill try and explain.

Using the up down left and right i wish to have a menu on a web page with a vertical carousel but the text gets enlarged the closer it gets to the main area for example

Current Selection would be 78px
Selection underneath would be 56px and so on..

I was wondering if you could be able to help on this so far all i have been able to find is the key case etc and I am at a loss
