Jquery.org website
Jquery.org website
Hey guys,
JÖrn has brought me on to this list to get development moving on the
jQuery website.
I'm taking the time on my bus ride home to type this up on the
blackberry so some of it might ramble on and make little sense now,
but if we work on it, these details can be fleshed out.
First up, a little background. I started getjquery.org to bring about
a community for both experienced jQuery members, and newbies to come
together, but john got in touch with me to look at rather than working
on seperate sites, coming together to work on a common site that keeps
it as one community. Some of our goals are the same, but unfortunatly
development seemed to come to a dead stop.
So I have agreed to come on board as the drupal guy for jQuery.org and
get the new site up and running. My timetable for this is sometime in
the new year. I'll be off work from 23dec - 3rd jan and can dedicate
to it almost full time then.
My thoughts on this are as follows (and bare with me, this is where
I'll ramble).
The first objective is to get a fresh copy of drupal beta 5 on the
server. On this will be installed some core features.
- drupal core
- cck module
- views module
- buddy list
- organic groups
- project (currently not upgraded to d5, still only for 4.7)
I'm thinking we should follow the drupal.org and groups.drupal.org
sites in the way they allow communities to be created. People are
more inclined to use jQuery (IMHO) if they see jQuery being used with
their programing language. Also international languages as well, and
members of the site can join any public groups. Users can easily
create groups around anything they want (that's relivent - like a
plugin team, or documentation project).
I also think we should use drupal's in-built forums for people to ask
support questions. This would be on top of the mailing list. Again
this is the same as drupal.org.
I think wiki-wise we should stick to mediawiki for documentation.
There should be two gateways into the site - jQuery.org gives you the
standard developer entrance, while getJquery.org gives a nice friendly
interface that leads into the main site - very easy to do using
drupal.
Content wise, custom content types will be created using cck, these include:
- tutorials
- code snippits
- video tutorials
- podcasts
(these last two can be hosted off-site).
These content types will follow a standard format, that will be marked
up semanticly so they are easy to read, and easy to spider and search.
The site should use jQuery to it's fullest, not overloading the site
with anything useless, but certainly code to help reduce the workflow
and make things a little snazzier. The site should also have live
demos to show off.
Alright guys, fingers are getting sore but this should get the ball rolling.
Can someone arrange for me to get access to the jquery server ftp and
database so I can get to work starting the install? As I say I'll be
able to get the basics up, but might not be able to start work right
away on more core stuff until christmas. The other option is I
continue development over at getjquery.org and then I can mirror this
on jquery.org's drupal development copy.
Tane
