[jQuery] What's the meaning of "underlying elements" in focus()

Hello all!
I read "Note that this does not execute the focus method of the
underlying elements." of "focus()" in jq' doc ,but I couldn't catch
the meaning of "underlying elements" .
Anyone may tell me which elements is "underlying elements",
