Menu events not firing

Hi,

I'm fairly new to Javascript and I've just started playing around with jQuery UI. I've written a very simple example which responds to menu events, but the events never fire! Here's the script:-

I want to be informed when someone clicks on a menu item. Please can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong, I've been floundering around for hours!
