We use jQuery across most pages on our site and are keen to have the file size as small as possible,

We access it from  http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.1/jquery.min.js

(I am aware that there is an equivalent Microsoft URL but the same problem remains)

The file is not gzipped by the Google servers,

This means that the file = 70kb.

You can watch this happen in Firefox Firebug, Chrome Developer Tools.

I can then download this file and gzip it myself to get down to 24kb

My question is

1 - do you know why the file is not coming down gzipped?

2 - do you know where I can access it on a CDN where it is gzipped?
