Newbie question
I hope this is not too off topic. If so, then just ignore it.
I am a desktop app developer (.net world) moving to web apps. The
tools and technologies in the web world are overwhelming but the user
community is fantastic! So I am trying to determine the best
environment for my development. My apps will be data intensive. Pretty
much mirroring the desktop apps I have developed (e.g. warehouse
management, inventory tracking etc).
So far, I am sold on JQuery and JQuery UI as the libraries to use and
plan on working with PHP and mySQL on the back end. I have also looked
at Prototype and in one book, it recommended it over JQuery for web
apps but from what I have read, I am not convinced. Any comments on
these decisions?
My real question regard template engines. I have been looking at
Smarty but am really having trouble relating to it. So my quesitons
are:
1. Should I use a template engine?
2. If so, what is recommended?
3. With JQery/PHP/MySql have I selected the best (or at least
reasonable) technology set?
4. I have also been intrigued by NuSphere offering a way to deploy my
web app as a desktop app...any input on that?
I hope these questions are not too sophmoric and appreciate any input.
TIA

PS Are there any JQuery, JavaScript, PHP, mySql or web development
user groups in the SF bay area?
