Replace apps browser message "page not found"

Is there a method whereby I can get my HTML5 jquery phonegap app to not show the default "page not found" when the link to the server fails. I need to handle it myself and my message works fine but is immediately followed by the default "page not found" message, which I do not want. How do I stop it?
