Select box change event

Select box change event

Hi,
I am new to jquery and try to use it for two simple functions on my page. Before i used Ajax but ajax didnt work on IE. So I am trying to get the value of a Selectbox on change and send it via get to another php page, this page echos the htmlinner for the second Selectbox. My first attemps to try out jquery didnt work.

So if #category changes it should just alert its current value. But it doesnt:(
