simple button or link

i have very limited knowledge on json, js but im ok with php and html.
I have small page where on the index page i want to create a small js or js type link/button. when it is clicked it will execute the php code in a php file which is in the same folder as the index file but without redirecting to another page. ive been searching google for days now and i am no better than when i started
you have no idea how much i would appreciate some help with this, i just do not know where to start. thanks
