Textarea with numbered lines

I'm looking to add the line number for each line to the left of the textarea box.

I would have thought that finding a solution to this would have been easy but it seems that all of the examples I've found on the internet are outdated and not working properly.

Can anyone help me out with this by providing me with a current, working example?
