True Beginner - Trying to get started

Hi everyone. I'm a Web Designer, but not a programmer. I really don't know how to write JS or any other type of script.

I came across jQuery looking for an Ajax floating window solution one of my clients wants to use. I downloaded everything from jQuery and I've gone to countless sites as well as reading all documentation available -- looking for something that will show me how to start using jQuery, but so far everything I've found is miles over my head.

Does anyone have a suggestion, can you point me to a site or document I can read that will help me get started?

I don't know where to place these scripts, and the "interface" has me totally confused. How does one use it?

I'm really interested in learning but haven't a clue as to where to begin. I'm sorry for sounding so painfully stupid, but like I said, a programmer I'm not.
