Validation Plugin: onFocusOut/KeyUp not working?

Validation Plugin: onFocusOut/KeyUp not working?

I'd like to use the jquery validation plugin.  According to the documentation, validation on keyUp or  onFocusOut should be enabled by default.  Is that not the case?  Even setting these options to true, I cannot seem to get them to work in that plugin.  Anyone care to share their experience?
