Validation plugin - what's the purpose of groups?

Validation plugin - what's the purpose of groups?

I'm trying to figure out what the purpose of the groups option in the validation plugin.  The docs say it's for grouping of error messages, but they still have to use errorPlacement and check the name attributes in order to place the message. Shouldn't that be what the groups option does? Or am i missing something?
