What is {% %} and {%= %}?

Hi, I've come across some browser side code that looks like {% %} or {%= %}. To me this looks almost like jsp but using '{' instead of '<'. Does anyone know what this is? I've tried searching for it but unfortunately search engines consider it all punctuation and ignore it.
