where to find some basic instructions?

I'm just starting to use jquery and i'm finding some things a bit hard. I don't really know codes and scripts so i work as it goes along.
I've been trying to create a way of presenting a set of images. A very simple slideshow where you click the image to get to the next one. It will be sitting in a div tag which fades in when you click to see the gallery.
It should fade in to the first image and then you click on the picture to move on to the next.
I'm really looking for a very plain strategy. A set of <> keys to navigate back and forward would be ideal but I'm thinking it might be easier to go step by step for now.
It shouldn't be that hard to re-create but each of these methods I find online have something going on (colors, borders, position etc) specifically inherent in their example. It confuses me. Does this mean I must find a way to make my own code?
Can u help me with this?
