Skewing and scaling are best done with CSS3. That demo uses multiple images to do its effect.

Hi jake, thanks for replying. I've seen this site earlier, but I sorta dismissed it. Do you think if I used the skewing in css3 it would work in most modern browsers? (IE most importantly? Seems most things aren't too compatible with it)

Is there another way even if it's tedious? I imagine in general if I had two boxes, 1 larger than the other, and animated them so one expanded and another shrunk it would create that illusion. Problem is that sounds pretty flat. I want to be able to animate a skew so it compresses and expands. Is this at all possible?

IE10 is considered a modern browser. Other versions are NOT. IE10 does this kind of effect.  The last link you posted only has the -webkit prefix, for full support you need to use ALL of the prefixes. -moz , -ms, -o, and without the prefix,
