addClass / removeClass ?

I've seen these discussions involving addClass / removeClass methods.

But don't quite understand what arguments they require. For example - if there is a statement like:

$("#illustration-text").removeClass("show");

What is "show" here ?

"show" would be the class that is getting removed.

Do you mean a CSS class?

yes, such as <div id="illustration-text"></div> would become <div id="illustration-text" class="show"></div>

Edit: er, the other way.

<div id="illustration-text" class="show"></div> would become <div id="illustration-text"></div>

Sorry...but the 'becoming' part is confusing. I thought <div id="illustration-text" class="show"></div> is referenced in jQuery as $("#illustration-text").addClass("show");

But don't understand the 'becoming'.
