So you're saying that the file loads in Firefox, but not in Chrome?

What is the value of 'status' in Chrome?

xhr.status = 404
xhr.statusText = error
status = error

I think 404 means something like file not found.
But trust me the file is there. And firefox is seeing it as well. ;))

Maybe there is something wrong with the path notation?
Backslash instead of "usual" slash, or double slash or something like that?

404 means that the file does not exist in the location where the script is looking for it. Can you see the response from the request?

This AlertBox doesn't show anything!

You need to physically look at the response in Firebug (like Firebug's console) or some other troubleshooting tool. I think Chrome has developer tools, right?

In chrome I used the developer-tool and execute the ajax-request from above.
The error-message is shown:

1. "XMLHttpRequest cannot load ../jquery/test.html. Origin null is not allowed by Access-Control-Allow-Origin."

Why is firefox able to do it and chrome is not?

That is definitely not a 404 error - it is an access control error typically related to cross-domain requests. Have a look here, especially the fist answer...http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4208530/xmlhttprequest-origin-null-is-not-allowed-access-control-access-allow-for-file

Essentially - are you running this on a web server? Or just on the local file system. If you are just running on the local file system FF is pretty tolerant but other browsers are not. All jQuery requests, including load(), expect to be running from a web server.

That was the reason why it didn't work in chrome.
Chrome doesn't support calls on file systems !!!!

I started my apache Webserver, executed the ajax request from above and ... surprise, surprise, everything worked well like in firefox.

So for the future remember:
Chrome doesn't support call on file systems, firefox does!
