appending options to a select element with an array
in Using jQuery

So I'm using jquery's .append() to add options to a select box in a dialog box after the page loads and I get the array from the backend. When I go to append the info to the select element, it simply doesn't work and nothing is breaking so I'm stumped... Any help would be appreciate. My code is below.

Here's a fiddle that I put together just to make sure my code would actually work in theory.
I've also tried using these two methods and they didn't work either:
- $("#mySelect").append(new Option(value, tempString));
- $("#mySelect").append('<option value="' + value + '">' + tempString + '</option>')
