changing text works, except for buttons

have a simple form. pretty much copy paste from the documentations.

I can change the text of any element on the page, except my buttons.

$('label:first').text('asdf')

[

<label for="user" class="ui-input-text">asdf</label>

]

$('button:first').text('asdf')

[

<button name="action" id="btnLogin" value="login" type="submit" data-theme="b" class="ui-btn-hidden" aria-disabled="false">asdf</button>

]

The above code is from my chrome javascript console. it does return the button object with the updated text, but on the page i still see the old one.

inspecting the element i can confirm that there's nothing else inside there.

$('#buttonid').html('asdf') gives me same results.

tried to insert a span inside the button... same bug

<div class="ui-block-b"><button name="action" id="btnForgot" value="forgot" type="submit" data-theme="c">I forgot my <span>login<span></button></div>

...

$('#btnForgot span').html('password');

again, it does return the span object with the changed text, and if i mouse over it, it does highlights the area it was supposed to occupy wth the changed text... but the old text is still rendered on the screen.

when buttons get enhanced by jquerymobile, they are hidden and wrapped by a div that also conatins a span with the text.

To change that text do the following:

$('#btnLogin').prev('.ui-btn-inner').children('.ui-btn-text').html('new text');

So to replace the button text has to be done in two steps. first change the text in the hidden button and then change it on the span.

now, that raises another question... is it desirable that i try to submit a patch to listen to enhanced buttons for attributes/content change and reflect that on the resulting markup (whatever it is) or that is so by design?

i can't wrap my head on the fact that if in the future someone wants, i don't know, shadows besides round corners... he will add yet another span around my buttons and then i will have to add three steps to change content/attribute... Or am i failing to see something obvious here?

I can't really answer you on that. I'm not part of the developer team under the jquerymobile proyect.

I believe that it will be interesting to submit a patch to "refresh" the button values. You'll have to caontact with the approipiate people to comment on it ans submit it.

To answer your second question. So far jquerymobiles replaces the button by a structure that holds a span with the 'fake' button and the original button hidden. I somebody wrapps any tag around your button, the position of the text tag will be on the same position relative to the button so you don't have to worry about that.
