Code Refresh Without Page Refresh

i am creating a users online using jquery, php, and mysql. i want to refresh the online users every second by running external php code, without a post or get function. any help would really help!

You would have to do an AJAX recursion with a setTimeout, but doing this every second will have negative effects on your general user experience I assume.
