No, this is the design of the selectable interaction, enabling multi-select by a drag-and-drop mouse lasso. Single select is as simple as a mouse click. It doesn't make sense to have that as an option because there's no logical way for a drag-and-drop mouse lasso to behave without multi-select. If you disagree and can point to an example in an existing desktop or web application, I'd love to hear about it.

I would also find it useful to be able to have it operate in both a single select mode (no lasso) and a multi-select mode.
